When thinking about career retraining, it’s important to first work out your wants and don’t wants from the role you’re considering starting. Make sure that the grass actually is greener before you put effort in to make the change. We recommend looking at the larger picture first to avoid the pitfalls.

A good example of this is, recently because of the new government initiative for housing, many people have retrained for a career as a HIPS assessor. We now have four times the number of assessors than are needed in this country; Finding a job as an assessor is now almost impossible.

We would recommend that the first thing to do is to take some time over the following questions.

* Having retrained, do you want to earn more money & if so how much?

* Is it important that this retrained career skill will last you till you retire?

* After training do you want your skill to enable you to find employment easily?

* How important is it that your new skill will enable you to choose where you live?

If you have answered yes to three or four of these questions, you’ve already eliminated the majority of the careers in the United Kingdom. We would recommend you look for a job in an industry that pays better than average, is growing and/or has more jobs available than people with the skills to fill them.

The market sector you choose should have a future, unlike ship building and coal mining, i.e. Stay away from any industry that is getting smaller or going overseas. To have a choice of where to live, the industry needs to be all over the UK and/or the world.

The best industry in the UK to give positive answers to the above questions is the computer industry, particularly IT. But don’t think its all geeky people sitting in front of PC’s for hours – there’s a lot more variety than that.

The greater number of people in the IT sector are just like you and me, have enjoyable interesting jobs and earn better than most. Employers have challenges finding qualified people to fill the jobs due to a shortage of skilled people, just check out any job site and you’ll see for yourself.

So if you now wish to consider the opportunities in the IT industry, find an experienced advisor who will happily discuss your needs. You will need someone who can help you find a job that’s right for you, your personality and your abilities. They should also be able to advise you on which qualifications are considered highly by industry, to maximise your ability to start work.
