One-Third of Moms Today Are Sole Breadwinners

Adecco Survey Finds that Majority of Working Moms Have a Different Career Path in Mind for their Children

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 7 /PRNewswire/ — This Mother’s Day, moms across the country will be celebrated for all they do for their families– and they deserve it.  According to the latest American Workplace Insights survey conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Adecco Staffing US, part of the world’s largest recruitment and workforce solutions provider, 30% of working moms(1) in America today are the sole breadwinners of their household.  However, being the sole provider may not be out of choice.  In fact, nearly half (52%) of moms would stay at home with their kids if they had the means/opportunity to do so. Additionally, the same number of working moms (52%) grew up in a household where their own mother worked.

Despite mothers’ different preferences on working or staying at home, the majority of working moms agree on one point – 74% want their children to pursue a different profession or career path than their own. These aspirations may stem from experiences or challenges they had in their own career.

Additional survey findings include:

Moms Turn to Help To Raise Their Children: Nearly half (47%) of mothers responded that their children are being cared for by someone else such as a spouse, daycare program, family/friend or nanny.  Moms Think They Make The Best Bosses: More than half (56%) of moms agree that mothers make the best bosses, yet only (42%) of moms would rather have their mom as a boss than their dad.  East Coast Spouses Are More Resentful Of Salaries: Over a fifth (21%) of all working parents in the Northeast indicated that their spouse/significant other resents that they make more money than they do. In the West, less than half of that number (only 7%) say their spouse/significant other feels resentful of them. Perceptions between men and women were largely similar as 15% of men and 14% of women felt that their spouse resented that they made more.

“This Mother’s Day, we continue to applaud the efforts of all working moms for their hard work at balancing families and careers,” said Rich Thompson, vice president of learning and performance at Adecco Group North America. “These survey findings indicate more moms are torn between having a successful work life and family life. What moms need to remember is they can have both, and today’s workforce offers a wide range of options including trying temporary employment which allows for a challenging and engaging career, while offering increased flexibility, enabling moms to better manage both their professional and family lives.”

Adecco Staffing US offers the following tips for ways businesses can reduce workplace stress and work more effectively:

Offer Flex-Time Alternatives.

Studies have shown that working men and women would reject a promotion if it required them to spend less time with their families, and would consider flexible hours an attractive option.  By developing a work schedule that meets both your needs and your employees’, productivity will increase, absenteeism will decrease, and employee morale will soar.

Provide Targeted Leadership Development for Working Moms.

Organizations that support leadership have a higher retention rate and happier employees. This is certainly the case with programming and workshops that target working parents in the office. Various companies like Adecco feature female leadership programs and conferences which strengthen skills in the office, while offering tips on ways to manage it all.

Allow Employees to Work From Home.

Studies show that productivity increases from 20 to 40 percent when people work at home because employees based out of the house work at their peak times with fewer interruptions and distractions, have more freedom from peer pressures and productivity norms, spend less time and energy dealing with the commuting.

Employment Gains Signal Upward Potential, Says The Conference Board

NEW YORK, May 7 /PRNewswire/ — The 224 thousand gain in jobs (excluding the 66,000 additional workers on the census) in April is very welcome news. It clearly shows that this economic recovery can no longer be seen as a jobless one. Following three quarters of growing production, companies apparently find they can’t squeeze out any more output without adding workers. This underscores yesterday’s news that Q1 productivity growth slowed to a healthy 3.6 percent following the staggering rate of above 7 percent on average in the previous three quarters.

These job gains are comparable to what we’ve seen following other deep recessions, suggesting that U.S. business has become more confident that the recovery is sustainable. Manufacturing jobs are returning to a significant extent, and construction employment turned the corner in the previous two months. The key factor this spring will be continued gains in service-sector employment beyond health and education.

Continued employment gains of this size could put the economy on a solid 3 percent growth track and — if productivity growth stays up – even boost it to 3.5 or 4 percent.

Online College Could Be The Answer You’re Looking For

Twenty years ago, when a student graduated from high school their choices were go to work or go to college. Things have changed. Now many students decide to travel after graduation or get some work experience before committing four years to college. Thanks to the Internet there is another option for students who want to go to school but also need to work. Obtaining associate degree online benefits those with a busy lifestyle that does not allow them to get a college education the traditional way.

While many adults obtain their bachelors degrees in a four-year program, some are forced to leave school for a spell. They may be ill, need time off, or are subject to events out of their control. But that does not have to be the end of a college career. Many online colleges accept old college credits. That way the student does not have to completely start over if they have already completed some college courses.

It can be a tough decision to go to college as an adult. The older student may have children or a full time job. With these responsibilities the student may find it difficult to commit to specific class times on a college campus. This is why getting a online master degree program works well for non traditional students.

Online college is helping adults fit college into their lives. Distance learning students study at their own pace. They can watch lectures and complete assignments at a convenient time from anywhere they have computer access. This means the students can work toward a degree during lunch breaks, business trips or after the kids go to bed.

Online college is more flexible than attending a traditional school, but it will still require some adjustments in your life. The student must be disciplined to keep up with class reading and assignments. However, it’s up to the student when they complete these tasks.

Busy professionals do not have to worry about rushing to make it to class on time or wandering around campus looking for the lecture hall. In distance college, everything happens through the Internet when the student is ready.

You don’t even have to see your professor in person. All communication is done through email or Internet chat rooms. Students are responding well to online courses. The Sloan Consortium conducted a study about online learning. Researchers found 4.6 million students were enrolled in at least one online course during the fall of 2008. That was a 17 percent increase from the year before. The schools involved in the survey report 73 percent of their students are requesting they offer more online courses.

For adults who want to get a college degree, online college is an excellent option. Students can start their online degree programs or finish ones they put on hold years ago. Online college is changing the lives of people. Start an associate degree program today and see where this new education takes you!

Venable, Small Businesses from Across Nation, Launch Small Business Coalition for Fair Contracting

Small businesses, the backbone of the American economy, are negatively impacted by government’s new in-sourcing policy

WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire/ — Venable LLP announced today that the firm, in conjunction with a group of clients and other government contractors, is launching the Small Business Coalition for Fair Contracting in response to federal government procurement initiatives that could, if unchecked, have a significant and negative impact on the operations of small businesses working for the federal government.

Small businesses represent 99.7 percent of all businesses in the nation and received 21.5 percent of all federal prime contracting dollars in fiscal year 2008. Small businesses contracting with the federal government employ workers in every state in the nation, do work for every government agency, and provide services from cleaning offices to providing complex intelligence analysis.

“Although well intentioned, the federal government’s current in-sourcing initiative threatens to take away work from hundreds of small entrepreneurs,” said Venable partner Rob Burton, who served at the Office of Federal Procurement Policy as the nation’s top career federal procurement official.

The 2011 budget has been designed to “rebalance” the relationship between the government and federal contractors through more oversight and in-sourcing. A goal of the budget is to “decrease reliance on contract services” by using federal employees to perform services currently provided by contractors.

In line with the budget’s goals, the Office of Federal Procurement Policy recently provided detailed guidance to agencies on the types of work that should be reserved for government employees. As a result, contractors may soon see fewer business opportunities, as agencies in-source jobs that serve a “critical function” in the government.

“No one wants to be associated with a ‘non-critical’ function,” Burton said. “Many federal agencies will be tempted to ‘over classify’ jobs as ‘critical.’ Those agency choices are not victimless. Small businesses are already feeling the impact of those choices.”

According to Burton, the in-sourcing initiative has already forced small contractors across the nation to dramatically reduce the scope of their operations as their contracts are cancelled and their employees are hired into government jobs.

The Coalition represents a diverse group of companies with a common interest in ensuring that small businesses do not suffer a disproportionate loss of business as a result of the government’s in-sourcing and other policy initiatives.

“The government recognizes small contractors’ critical role in supporting the operation of the federal government and understands the importance of expanding that role,” said Burton. “The coalition will educate lawmakers and federal executives about the unintended consequences of the in-sourcing initiative, provide ideas on how to fix the process and implement fair solutions that best meet the nation’s needs, while protecting the economic viability of America’s small businesses.”

The Small Business Coalition for Fair Contracting will hold a briefing conference call on Tuesday, May 11 at 11 am (EDT). Small businesses doing business with the government are invited to participate in the call and should contact Venable for additional information. Although the call is closed to members of the media, Venable partners Rob Burton and Paul Debolt will be available to provide members of the media with commentary on the call and issues raised by the participants.

Note: An American Lawyer top 100 law firm, Venable LLP has attorneys practicing in all areas of corporate and business law, complex litigation, intellectual property and government affairs. Venable serves corporate, institutional, governmental, nonprofit and individual clients throughout the U.S. and around the world from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. and offices in California, Maryland, New York and Virginia.
